A recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics shows Tamale South Member of Parliament (MP), Haruna Iddrisu, leading three other contenders with the highest support to succeed President John Dramani Mahama as the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2028 presidential candidate.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime‘s ‘Prime Insight’, Director of Research at Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, said the Member of Parliament for Tamale South leads with 27% followed closely by the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia with 26%.

According to him, the polls conducted in July, 2025, ranked Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson third with 22% support followed by Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah with 11%, among the top four.

Although Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings and MP for Korle Klottey, received 4% support in the poll, she has been tipped by some senior figures within the party as a potential contender to lead the NDC in the 2028 presidential race.

The poll also revealed that other individuals whose identity were not revealed garnered 3% support.

Sources within the NDC have also tipped the Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, as one of the preferred candidates to contest the party’s flagbearer race.

Information available indicates that the MP also has the support of some notable individuals within the party, and will declare his intentions later as events unfolds.

Mussa Dankwah also said the poll, which was conducted to gauge the popularity of some key figures within the NDC, showed a little percentage gap between Haruna Iddrisu and Johnson Asiedu Nketia, with some significant gaps between the rest.

He, however, mentioned that the list used for the polls are not exhaustive as current Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, may be included in if her candidature is confirmed in future polls to vie as the party’s flagbearer.

The findings come in the wake of recent developments within the NDC, where several senior party members, including its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, have embarked on what he described as “Thank You Tours.”

Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has also launched a physical activity and wellness initiative dubbed “A Walk with Julius,” which recently brought together party stalwarts and Members of Parliament together at Madina and some parts of Accra.

Some political analysts often view these activities as strategic efforts by NDC presidential hopefuls to connect with party members at various levels, ahead of the party’s official launch of its 2028 flagbearer race.

Some political observers have raised concerns about the timing of these developments, arguing that it may be too early, warning that key government officials involved could become distracted from their official duties, as they shift focus toward pursuing personal political ambitions.

The research think tank reports that the poll was conducted online, by telephone, and face to face with a total sample size of 10,493 respondents, between May 10 and June 27, 2025.
