A 60-YEAR-old woman has unfortunately passed on and, two other people, who are both teenagers, have sustained body injuries after a tricycle they were traveling on, crashed head-on with a Man Diesel articulator truck.
The body of the deceased, Lucy Opoku, has since been deposited at the morgue, while two other occupants of the tricycle, Ebenezer Amponsah, 18, the rider and Desmond Yeboah Sarpong, 17, have been hospitalised.
The fatal road accident, reportedly, happened on a section of the road at Asonomaso-Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region around 2:30 p.m. on January 20, 2026, the police has announced.
According to the police, all the three people onboard the tricycle including Yeboah, Amponsah and Lucy Opoku sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment, but Lucy Opoku, whose injuries were severe, died.
Narrating what led to the accident, a Mampoonteng District MTTD sitrep said, “On 20/01/2026, about 1430 hours, suspect driver, David Adjei, aged 35 years, was driving a Man Diesel articulator truck with registration number AE 1526-12 from Asonomaso towards Asonomaso-Nkwanta.
“While suspect rider Ebenezer Amponsah, aged 18 years, was riding a tricycle, whose registration number is not yet known from Asonomaso-Nkwanta towards Asonomaso direction. On reaching a section of the road at Asonomaso-Nkwanta, it was alleged that, the truck and tricycle collided in the middle of the road.
“Suspect rider Ebenezer Amponsah and two other occupants on board the tricycle, Desmond Yeboah Sarpong, aged 17 years and Lucy Opoku, aged 60, sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Zion Praise Hospital, Kona, for medical treatment, but victim Lucy Opoku was pronounced dead on arrival.”
The Man Diesel truck, the police said, has since been impounded at the station for examination and the driver, David Adjei, has been detained, adding “However, the accident tricycle was not seen at the scene.”
