Some of the seized products
The Western Regional Directorate of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has safely disposed of seized goods, worth about GH¢100,000.
This was after a post-market surveillance which led to the seizure of non-compliant, sub-standard, falsified, and expired products during the third quarter of last year.
The seized products, weighing about 1.5 metric tonnes, were disposed of at the landfill site in Sofokrom, in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
A Principal Officer of FDA, Francis Edem Odum, stressed the need for manufacturers to register their goods with the Authority, and encouraged retailers to demand proper documentation from manufacturers.
He advised retailers to always check constantly to avoid displaying expired products on their shelves.
Mr. Odum added, “Always look out for the registration certificate for both local or imported goods.”
The Principal Officer noted that there were administrative and spot fines coupled with prosecution in some cases, adding, “Manufacturers ought to do the right things in the supply chain.”
He said the FDA would continue with its post-market surveillance duties to safeguard the health of consumers.
The Public Relations Officer of the Western Regional FDA, Solomon Kwabena Boni, said a “Love Your Health” campaign by the Authority would embark on massive education and sensitisation to help safeguard the health of the public.
He disclosed that the country’s public health has mandated the Authority to undertake such exercises to protect the health of the consumer.
