Sampson Asiedu
A 21-YEAR-old ex-convict has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of stealing two mobile phones from injured road accident victims.
The Nsuta Circuit Court also ordered Sampson Asiedu, the convict, to pay GH¢5,000, which is the value of the two stolen phones, or serve an additional two years in prison.
The prosecution team told the court that Francis Agyekum Marfo, the complainant, is a military officer based in Accra, who got involved in an accident while traveling with his family.
The crash happened on the Juaben-Effiduase road on May 2, 2026. Asiedu and another person arrived at the scene and conveyed the injured victims to hospital, the prosecution team disclosed.
Later on, while receiving treatment, Marfo realised that his phones were missing so he called one of the numbers and Asiedu answered with a promise of returning the phones.
Asiedu however refused to return the phones after some days. He also switched off the phones. Marfo therefore reported the theft to the police, who nabbed Asiedu on June 4, 2026 at Juaben.
The prosecution team further disclosed in court that during interrogation, Asiedu admitted stealing the two mobile phones, adding that he even sold the phones for GH¢300.
The court, aware that Asiedu had previously been convicted for a similar offence and had served a prison term, sentenced him to four years imprisonment after he had pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing.
