Hausa Youth Ghana last Saturday celebrated World Hausa Day 2026 at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, bringing together traditional leaders, religious authorities, youth representatives, cultural enthusiasts, and political figures to celebrate the rich culture, language, and identity of the Hausa people.
The event was attended by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, and other distinguished personalities from Ghana and Nigeria.
The Guest of Honour, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, was accompanied by members of the Nigerian National Assembly, including Senator Abdulazeez Yar’Adua, Senator Muntari Dandutse, and Senator Lawal Adamu Usman.
Senator Barau commended Hausa Youth Ghana for creating a platform to promote Hausa heritage as well as strengthen friendship and unity among communities. He described Hausa as more than a language, noting its historic role in connecting people across West Africa through trade, scholarship, diplomacy, and culture.
He highlighted the strong historical ties between Ghana and Nigeria, and encouraged young people to preserve their heritage while pursuing education, developing skills, and creating opportunities for themselves and their communities.
“Our young people must be proud of their heritage and allow it to inspire them to build a better future. They must acquire quality education, develop modern skills, establish businesses, create opportunities for others, and contribute positively to the communities where they live,” he said.
As part of the celebration, Senator Barau awarded scholarships to two members of the Hausa community in Ghana to study Hausa language at Nigerian universities, supporting efforts to sustain the language among future generations.
The celebration ended with renewed calls for cultural preservation, unity, and cooperation among African communities.
