Active Covid-19 Cases Jump to 108 in Volta as Oti Records Two Cases

The rate of Covid-19 infections in the Volta Region seems to have increased drastically from 37 active cases to 108 within a week.

The latest update which DGN Online received from the Volta Regional Health Directorate also indicated that two persons have lost their lives to the deadly novel coronavirus recorded in nine out of the 18 Municipality and Districts in the region.

The Ho Municipality which is also the regional capital tops with 41 cases. This is followed by the commercial city of Hohoe with 24 cases.

South Tongu has recorded 18 cases while its neighbour, North Tongu follows closely with 17 cases.

Ketu North has three cases while Central Tongu has two cases. Ho West, Ketu South and Kpando have all recorded a case.

The Deputy Volta Regional Director of Health Services in Charge of Public Health, Dr Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, who confirmed the incident lamented the disregard of the Covid-19 safety protocols across the region and urged all and sundry to take the protocols seriously.

He explained that strict adherence to these protocols; regular handwashing with soap under running water, sanitizing the hand, wearing of nose masks, social distancing and reducing movements to the barest minimum will go a long way to reduce the spread of the virus.

Oti Records 2 Cases

Meanwhile, Volta Region’s northern neighbour, the Oti Region has recorded two cases of the virus.

The cases which were recorded on January 21, 2021, are the first set of cases confirmed this year, a statement from the Oti Regional Health Directorate has said.

The statement which was signed by the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Osei Kuffour Afreh explained that the cases were confirmed among a set of seven (7) samples that were taken from patients who complained of signs and symptoms at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nkwanta South Municipal on 18th of January, 2021.

Their samples were taken and sent to the lab on 19th January 2021 where results confirmed the infection.

Dr Afreh stressed that steps have been initiated for management of the cases as contact tracing continues.

He announced that “Given the resurgence of the disease, the following measures should be strictly enforced: reactivation of the rapid response teams, the correct and consistent wearing of nose masks, social distancing, surveillance at entry points, increased sensitization and contact tracing.”
