AFCON Construction Saves Army Recruits

AUTHORITIES AND recruits at the Ghana Army Recruits Training School (ARTS) at Shai Hills in the Greater Accra Region have been given a major sigh of relief, following the renovation of all major roads within the premises of the school.

The poor nature of the roads has been attributed to some life threatening fractural injuries sustained by recruits during training, which has led to many of these recruits being sacked or released from the school.

For some time now, the training school has been bedevilled with several infrastructural challenges; topmost amongst them is poor road network in the school. The poor road network has been a major threat and concern to the lives of recruits and instructors.

Due to this development, AFCONS Infrastructure Limited, an Indian construction company working on the Tema-Akosombo railway line, has come to the aid of the school. The company will renovate all major roads within the school.

The 4.5 kilometre stretch of road in the school is being renovated by the Indian railway construction company at no cost to Ghana.

Project Coordinator at AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd, Assim Gupta, said the project is being done as part of their social responsibility to the area.

According to him, the company is making efforts to ensure they contribute in diverse ways to areas where they operate.

On his part, Lt. Col. Elvis Gyadu, Commander of the Ghana Army Recruit Training School, expressed his appreciation for the kind gesture.

He said the training school needed basic facilities such as accommodation, demonstration block, ablution units, and other logistics to enhance effective training.

According to him, the need to develop the infrastructural base of the school was key to achieving its mandate.

He called on other corporate institutions and individuals to support noble causes such as developing infrastructure for the security services in order to build the nation.

Meanwhile, the army training school has begun the construction and renovation of some accommodation blocks for instructors of the school.

The defence ministry recently ordered the release of at least $50,000 for the construction of new accommodation facilities for the school.

This follows the visit of the Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, to the school where he observed that the school, which trains many of the country’s soldiers, had deplorable accommodation facilities.
