President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the proposed anti-LGBTQ Bill currently under consideration in Parliament is not a priority for his administration, urging Ghanaians to focus on more pressing socio-economic challenges confronting the nation.
Addressing a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House on Monday, March 30, 2026, the President emphasised that while the LGBTQ+ debate remains important, it pales in comparison to urgent national needs such as job creation, healthcare delivery, education, food security, and access to shelter.
He described the issue as highly sensitive and emotionally charged, noting that even advanced liberal democracies continue to grapple with it.
President Mahama called for restraint, mutual respect, and measured engagement in handling discussions around the subject.
Referencing his recent interaction with the World Affairs Council, he reiterated that Ghana’s immediate focus must remain on improving the living conditions of its citizens rather than allowing divisive debates to overshadow critical development priorities.
The President pointed out that the ongoing deliberations over the private member’s bill before Parliament reflect a broad spectrum of views within the country.
He stressed that any eventual decision must be guided by constitutional principles and respect for human rights.
“While there are strong and differing views within our society, we believe that issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue, and the rule of law,” he stated.
President Mahama also acknowledged the international attention Ghana has received over its handling of LGBTQ+ issues, including reactions from foreign institutions.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining constructive engagement with global partners while ensuring that national decisions are rooted in Ghana’s constitutional and cultural context.
He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to democratic governance, stating that Ghana will continue to uphold its values while engaging respectfully with the international community.
