Asamoah Gyan Linked With GFA Presidency, Okraku’s Future Uncertain

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has emerged as a possible contender for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency ahead of next year’s elections, amid reports that incumbent Kurt Okraku may not seek a third term.

The country’s all-time leading goalscorer has not officially declared his intentions, but speculation is growing over the future leadership of Ghana football, according to Joy Sports’ Muftawu Nabila Abdulai.

The talk follows a controversial amendment to the GFA statutes at the 2025 Congress in Prampram, which raised the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.

The change fuelled expectations that Okraku, who is also second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), would run again.

His administration has since come under scrutiny after Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars also missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, their first absence from the tournament in more than two decades.

Gyan, a former Sunderland and Al Ain striker, is Africa’s leading scorer in World Cup history. He has held several roles under Okraku and currently serves as an ambassador for the national teams.

He is not the only name in the frame. Others reportedly considering a run include administrator Samuel Annim Addo, who manages Gyan; former Brong Ahafo Regional FA chairman Ralph Gyambrah; Karela United chief executive Elloeny Amande; and former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew, who now heads Nania FC. A former GFA vice-president is also expected to join the race.

The GFA has yet to announce the election timetable and nomination process, leaving prospective candidates waiting for clarity.
