Kylian Mbappe celebrating his winner
Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including an 87th-minute winner, to hand Real Madrid victory over Barcelona in El Clasico and end the hosts’ perfect start to the Spanish top-flight season.
Barcelona were chasing an outright record for consecutive wins at the start of a league campaign, but Hansi Flick’s side fell short of the nine straight victories achieved by Real Madrid’s 1968-69 team.
Mbappe put the visitors ahead four minutes before the break in fortunate fashion. Gerard Martin’s attempted clearance of Yan Diomande’s low cross struck the France striker and looped past Joan Garcia.
The game opened up before the interval, with Mbappe hitting the post and Lamine Yamal sidefooting wide from close range at the other end.
Barcelona levelled 16 minutes into the second half when captain Raphinha took Pedri’s pass and drilled a shot through Jude Bellingham’s legs into the far corner.
Martin then came close to redeeming himself, but his header was superbly clawed away one-handed by Andriy Lunin, who started in place of the ill Thibaut Courtois.
With a draw looking likely, Bellingham’s skill on halfway sparked a late move. Substitute Eduardo Camavinga raced forward and squared for Mbappe to tap into an empty net.
Visiting manager Jose Mourinho marked the goal with a small knee slide by the dugout and a fist pump.
Barcelona remain top, two points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid after 10 matches, with Real a point further back in third.
