Some executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya South of the Ashanti Region who are reportedly doing the second term bidding of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) have refused to respond to allegations of disrespect by the MCE towards chiefs and queen mothers of the area.
The Constituency Chairman, Benjamin Oduro Frimpong, at a press conference on Tuesday April 6, 2021, to respond to litany of allegations levelled against the MCE, Michael Amoah Awuku, failed to comment on the concerns of the traditional leaders in a bid to push for the retention of the MCE.
The MCE reportedly did not take kindly to the fact that chiefs and queen mothers in the area paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo recently without his involvement.
The ‘bad blood’ between the MCE and the traditional leaders stemmed from the fact that the MCE allegedly told them in plain language that he derives his powers only from the President and therefore does not take any directives from any traditional leader.
The MCE’s posture allegedly angered the traditional rulers who have since taken an entrenched position that they will not support him again.
MCE Denial
The MCE has debunked the claims and said he has good relations with everyone in the district.
He said the clandestine attempts by his detractors to erroneously create an impression that he was not working for the people, would fail woefully and added that he was aware that his detractors were planning series of ‘evil’ moves, which included demonstration in the municipality, to discredit him for reasons best known to them.
However, critics of the MCE are insisting that there is a ‘bad blood’ in the district and the MCE and his group are to be blamed for that.
They said the MCE’s supporters have been frequenting radio programmes to attack the chiefs who are insisting there should be accelerated development in the district.
They said they are against the MCE’s reappointment because of the level of disunity and underdevelopment in the district, and that was part of the reasons they recently staged a demonstration and the police cum military team was unleashed on them.
