Chereponi Students Flee Campus

DAILY GUIDE has learnt that some students of the Chereponi Senior High School (SHS) in the Chereponi District of the North East Region have fled campus due to fears about renewed clashes between the Chokosis and Konkombas.

According to reports, some parents, who have information about the reprisal attacks, have ordered their wards to leave campus for home.

Students of the school, believed to be Konkombas, were seen on Sunday and Monday at the Chereponi Lorry Station with their belongings.

It would be recalled that Chokosis and Konkombas clashed over a piece of land in the Chereponi District last year.

The conflict resulted in the burning of over 150 houses, with about 15 people losing their lives.

The paper also gathered that pregnant women in some deprived communities in the district could not access any health facility due to the violence.

Women and children in the affected communities reportedly fled to Tamale and Togo to ensure their safety.

When DAILY GUIDE contacted one Osman, the Assistant Headmaster of the Chereponi SHS, he confirmed that some Konkomba students left the school due to pressure from their parents.

According to him, even though the school authorities were not in favour of the move, they eventually agreed because the school could not guarantee their safety.

“We didn’t like the idea, but the students thought their lives were at risk and so we could not do anything about the situation since their parents wanted them home,” he said.

Osman indicated that police personnel had been stationed on campus to protect the students.
