In a stunning reversal, Cynthia Morrison, former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection appears to be engaging the governing pary, NPP to find ways of withdrawing her decision to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.
According to sources the MP is having discussion with her mother party to return and dump her independent bid in view of the logjam in Parliament occasioned by the declaration of four parliamentary seats by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.
Morrison, who is currently representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Agona West MP, opted for an independent candidacy after alleging unfair treatment during the party’s internal primary for the 2024 election.
She made her announcement about three months ago, following her defeat in the NPP’s parliamentary primary, where she received 152 votes compared to Christopher Arthur’s 240.
Despite her loss, Morrison has emphasized her commitment to the development of Agona West, which motivated her independent bid.
Her decision was seen as a bold move, sparking debate within the NPP ranks.
A Change of Heart
The reasons behind Morrison’s sudden withdrawal are shrouded in uncertainty, but insiders suggest the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central MP, after engaging with her, managed to persuade her to rescind her decision and bounce back to prioritize party unity over personal ambitions.
