Jean Mensa
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, is scheduled to appear before Parliament today, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, to provide a briefing on the recently concluded limited voter registration exercise.
During the limited voter registration exercise, which began on September 12, 2023, the EC successfully registered over 600,000 new voters across the country.
However, the decision by the EC to restrict the exercise to its district offices has been a point of contention for the Minority in Parliament. They argue that this approach has placed a financial burden on Members of Parliament.
Last week, during the presentation of the business statement, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, announced that the EC boss would provide an update on the electoral process to the House on Wednesday.
In his statement, the Majority Leader emphasized the importance of hearing from the EC boss before making any judgments, stating, “It wasn’t necessary to castigate the EC when you have not heard from them, it was unnecessary.”
The voter register exhibition exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission ended on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, after commencing on November 3.
The appearance of Jean Mensa before Parliament today will provide an opportunity for Members of Parliament to receive firsthand information and address any concerns related to the limited voter registration exercise and other relevant matters.
