GAF Arrests ‘Protocol Recruitment Scammer’

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has arrested a man linked to a viral video in which he falsely presents himself as a soldier.

The individual, identified as Alex Cobbinah, was filmed wearing a Ghana Navy vest and displaying military items while making alarming claims about the administration’s intentions regarding military personnel.

In the video, Cobbinah alleges that President-elect John Dramani Mahama plans to dismiss all soldiers recruited through protocol means. His claims have raised concerns within the military community and prompted further investigation.

A press statement from the Ghana Armed Forces revealed that an investigation into Cobbinah’s social media activity uncovered multiple videos of him wearing military attire and falsely claiming to be a member of the armed forces.

“The Military Police acted swiftly, locating and apprehending Cobbinah at his residence in Madina Zongo Junction, Accra. He has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation and potential prosecution, serving as a warning to others who may engage in similar fraudulent activities,” part of the statement read.

GAF further reiterated its stance against individuals posing as intermediaries and agents demanding payment for enlistment into the armed forces.

“The public is urged to report any such activities to the nearest military installation or police station. It is crucial to note that anyone who pays money to these agents is also complicit in the fraudulent act,” the statement added.

The military authority emphasised that the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967 remains effective, prohibiting anyone from wearing or using military uniforms or equipment unless they are a legitimate member of the Armed Forces of Ghana, as the misuse of military attire poses serious risks, facilitating impersonation and potentially enabling criminal activities that threaten public safety.

In light of these developments, GAF urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving unauthorised military attire.
