The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has provided critical financial support to help save the life of a 10-year-old girl battling a severe brain condition, offering renewed hope to her family after weeks of uncertainty and distress.
Young Regina Agyeiwaa is currently receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she has been diagnosed with a posterior fossa tumour—a dangerous condition located at the base of the brain that requires urgent and highly specialised surgical care.
The cost of treatment had placed an overwhelming burden on her family, who struggled to raise the necessary funds to proceed with the life-saving procedures.
Following a formal appeal for assistance, GoldBod acted promptly, assessing the situation and extending support through its Special Intervention Programme.
A delegation led by Head of the Programme Unit, Gloria Precious Ankomah, presented a cheque of GH¢86,454.00 to cover the full cost of Regina’s treatment. The funding is expected to cater for two critical surgeries recommended by medical specialists.
She said, “Just a few months in operation, GoldBod has undertaken over 75 social interventions, and this is a commendable achievement. Under our health interventions, we supported individuals to undergo medical surgeries both within and outside Ghana, which include adults, and children as young as six years old.”
Doctors at Korle Bu have emphasised that the surgeries are essential to improving Regina’s chances of recovery.
Patrick Bankah, a neurosurgeon at the hospital, explained the severity of her condition, “She actually came in extremis. She came critically ill. She has a tumour at the back of the head. And because of the presence of this brain tumour at the back of the head, water wasn’t leaving the head satisfactorily.
“She had had initial surgery where a tube is put in the spaces in the brain that contain the water for it to drain, to reduce the pressure in the head.”
The appeal for help was initiated by Regina’s uncle, Edward Kwasi Krupah, after the family exhausted all available means of raising funds. According to him, the financial demands of the treatment had pushed them to the brink, leaving little hope of securing the urgent care Regina needed.
Following internal review and verification processes, GoldBod approved the request, reaffirming its commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals facing critical health challenges.
Relief, Gratitude
The intervention has significantly eased the financial strain on the family and ensured that Regina’s surgeries can proceed without delay.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the family, Regina’s mother, Madam Grace Ahenkorah, expressed deep gratitude, describing the support as life-saving. She recounted their desperate search for help, noting that while many avenues had been explored, GoldBod ultimately came through in their moment of greatest need.
Her sentiments were echoed by Mr. Krupah, who described the support as a turning point, restoring hope at a time when it was rapidly fading.
Support from Medical Team
Officials from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, including Dr. Mawuli Ametepe, Chief Nursing Officer Madam Felicia Ahiahonu, and Matron Madam Elsie Sandra Foli, were present to receive the donation and facilitate the next steps in treatment.
Dr. Ametepe commended GoldBod for its timely intervention, noting that Regina’s condition requires two carefully coordinated surgeries. With funding now secured, he expressed confidence that the medical team can proceed without interruption and deliver the necessary care for a positive outcome.
