MINISTER OF State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, has revealed that government is in the process of developing a policy document aimed at addressing graduate unemployment in Ghana.

Professor Yankah made this known at a conference on Tertiary Education and Enterprise Development in the country.

He explained that a career guidance and counseling office will be established to counsel students about the advantages of the courses they pursue.

The 3-day conference which started on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, in Koforidua, is under the theme: “Putting Our Graduates To Work.”

The conference being organized by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Business Development, is expected to end Friday.

It seeks to develop a national strategy as well as share the national vision on graduate unemployment and entrepreneurship development.

Professor Yankah noted that the problem of graduate unemployment was the low level of entrepreneurial activities among graduates.

He added that there was the need to re-orient unemployed graduates to consider self-employment.

Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, said youth unemployment in Africa was a major challenge.

He noted that there was a high rate of youth unemployment in Ghana.

The conference brought together policymakers, students, graduates, academicians and captains of industry, among others, to discuss and examine best practices to guide job creation in Ghana.
