The Electoral Commission (EC) says a photograph purported to be Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Commission at New Patriotic Party (NPP) Annual Delegates’ Conference held in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region is fake.
According to a statement issued by the Commission, the Chairperson was not at the conference and therefore urged the public to disregard the photograph said to be Jean Mensa with some NPP members at the conference.
“Our attention has been drawn to a photograph making rounds on social media said to be the Chairperson of Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensa at the recently held NPP delegates’ conference held in Kumasi,” it said.
The statement further cautioned the general public to be wary of some unscrupulous personalities who have made their sole aim to tarnish the image of the EC Chairperson.
“This comes to inform the general public to disregard this false news item as the said photograph is nor Jean Mensa.
“We entreat the public to be mindful of the scheme of a section within our society whose sole mission is to tarnish the reputation of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission,” the statement indicated.
Over 6000 delegates thronged the Kumasi venue to deliberate on some proposals that have been tabled for possible amendment to the party’s constitution.
Key among the proposals is to elect a presidential candidate two clear years before a major election.
Currently, the party elects a candidate two years before elections if the party is in opposition and a year when the party is in power.
Party members believe the current arrangement makes it difficult for a new candidate to mend bridges and heal the wounds of other aspirants before the election.
