The Upper West Regional Police Command has secured the conviction of a young man who was caught possessing firearms and ammunitions.
Muhammed Ali pleaded guilty to charges relating to possessing firearms without lawful authority and preparation to commit robbery.
The court, presided over by His Honour Jonathan Avoogo, on Monday, August 11, 2025, convicted him on his own plea and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour.
Muhammed Ali was arrested on July 30, 2025, at Bugubelle, a town in Sissala East Municipal District of the Upper West Region, following a motor accident involving him.
Responding officers discovered incriminating exhibits on him at the accident scene, including a quantity of ammunition and offensive weapon.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement, said upon further interrogation, Ali admitted being aware of the items found in his possession and confessed to having knowledge on ongoing robberies in the municipality.
He also identified other accomplices, who are currently on the run.
Ali was subsequently charged with robbery, preparation to commit crime to wit robbery, and possession of firearm without lawful authority. He pleaded guilty to all charges, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
The police said strenuous efforts are underway to apprehend the other accomplices and bring them to justice.
“The Upper West Regional Police Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” the statement added.
