Marhaba FM Loses Transmitter To Power Surge

The only 24/7 Hausa radio station in Accra with a large listenership in Accra is reeling under an unreliable power supply to their Kwabenya transmitter.

Listeners whose entertainment and information needs are met through the radio station are wondering why their darling radio station is suffering such hiccups.

“Our Comet Hill, Kwabenya, transmitter bought at a cost of 20,000 has been damaged by the now constant power surge,” an anonymous staff of the company told BEATWAVES.

The staff also revealed that the station is inundated with calls from listeners about the now breaks in transmission, adding that “we spend GH¢3,000 on pre-paid and a GH¢1,000 for diesel for our generator which brings our monthly expenditure on power to GH¢4,000.”

The CEO of Marhaba Media, Alhaji Baba Sheriff Abdullahi, could not be reached for comment on the now incessant hiccups in the transmission the station is suffering.

He had earlier told BEATWAVES, however, that the Kwabenya location of their transmitter serves other media establishments who also suffer the effects of the power outages.

“An important electricity pole serving the transmitters in the area was on fire recently, a situation which had dampening effect on our already difficult situation,” the CEO said.

“In spite of our challenges which we plead with the relevant agencies to address, we would continue to serve the information needs of our numerous listeners within Accra and beyond,” he added.

Hausa, being a widely spoken language in the country, especially Accra, Marhaba FM stands out as one of the non-English language radio stations in the nation’s capital.
