NADMO/DVLA Impound Overloaded School Buses

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) have joined forces to impound the buses of private schools that overload pupils.

In addition, buses without roadworthy certificates and insurance were impounded during the exercise, which began on Tuesday, 22nd January 2019.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, which saw about 21 school buses being impounded, the Berekum Municipal Director of NADMO Kojo Agyekum, popularly known as Daakyehene, said there has been public outcry about the overloaded private school buses and stressed the need for cooperation.

According to Mr. Agyekum, NADMO would not allow unscrupulous people to endanger the lives of innocent school children.

“Before the buses are released to the schools, we will make sure that all relevant documents are made available through the DVLA and that any offending school bus driver who will defy the order will be arraigned before the law courts.”

He warned private school proprietors not to risk the lives of the school-children to make profit.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Berekum, Kofi Agyei, in an interview with the media, backed the operation and advised the school’s proprietors to collaborate with NADMO and DVLA to avert road accidents.

He bemoaned the deplorable state of some school buses, which can be described as death traps.

“The government is very serious about education, which is the bedrock of every nation; it will be inappropriate for his administration to remain idle for the school’s proprietors to toy with the lives of poor school-children who undoubtedly would be the leaders of tomorrow.”
