Nana Akufo-Addo

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to head its Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming presidential election in the Republic of Benin, scheduled for April 12, 2026.

A statement issued yesterday announced that the former President would lead a “carefully balanced and multidisciplinary” delegation drawn from across ECOWAS member states.

The team will include diplomats, electoral experts, representatives of national electoral commissions, members of the ECOWAS Parliament and the Council of the Wise, as well as officials from the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

According to the statement, former President Akufo-Addo is expected to arrive in Cotonou, the capital of Benin, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, and will return to Accra on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, after completing the mission.

Former President Akufo-Addo’s experience in governance and diplomacy is seen as a key asset in ensuring credible observation of the electoral process in Benin.

The mission is part of ECOWAS’s longstanding effort to strengthen democratic practices and uphold regional stability across West Africa.
