Alhaji Hamid Gbewaa, the Northern Regional Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been suspended by the party with immediate effect.

The NDC suspended the Northern Regional Vice Chairman for three months to make way for further investigations into the alleged assault case.

The suspension decision was reached at a meeting on January 16, 2024, between the Northern Regional Chairman, Northern Regional Secretary, and the Functional Executive Committee (FEC), who were briefed about the assault on the Northern Regional Treasurer.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey stated, “At the end of its deliberations the following decisions were taken in accordance with Article 48(1), 48(6) and 48(8) (b) of the Party’s constitution that with immediate effect, your membership of the NDC is suspended.”

The statement further noted that the suspension of the Northern Regional Vice Chairman has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for adjudication.

“You are therefore by this letter, to take note, and notice is hereby given, that your membership of the NDC is suspended pending the hearing and final determination of the matter,” the statement said.

Alhaji Hamid Gbewaa was arrested and later granted bail in connection with the assault of the Northern Regional Treasurer, after the NDC supporters protested against the party.

The NDC supporters stormed the regional and constituency offices of the party and locked them up.

Meanwhile, the NDC has since condemned the assault of the Northern Regional Treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu.
