No Decision Yet On Football

Kurt Okraku

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has stated that a decision to continue or truncate the 2019/20 league season depends on his outfit’s discussions with government.

He explained that the country’s football governing is on a stand-by for what government will say amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The FA chief has disclosed that there has been a fruitful negotiation with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other stakeholders on the way forward for restart of the league.

However, a decision will only be made after the government comes out with clear guidelines for the future of sports in the country.

“We took a decision to speak to the ministry to intervene because we were heading in the right direction until the COVID-19. Football is perhaps one of the biggest vehicles in solving some of our social problems in this country,” he said on Happy Sports.

“Fortunately for us, discussions have gone very well. We are now waiting to hear from government. It has always been fruitful. Aside from government, we have engaged WAFU, CAF and FIFA. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has decided to push the FIFA forward from July to an earlier date and so far it has been good,” he added.

Okraku also disclosed there has been a discussion with member bodies like WAFU, CAF and FIFA pertaining COVID-19.

Major football leagues like the EPL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and French Ligue 1 are expected to resume soon despite calls from other quarters to shelve it due to the pandemic.
