ORC To Scrap 513,388 Businesses

Jemima Mamaa Oware

THE OFFICE of the Registrar of Companies says it has begun the process of scrapping business names of owners of sole proprietorships which have failed to renew their annual registration by April 2023.

In a statement issued and signed Tuesday, January 31, by the Registrar of Companies, Jemima Mamaa Oware, the exercise was in line with section 5A (2) of the Registration of Businesses Act, 1962 (Act 151) which mandated the office to remove from the register businesses that have defaulted in their renewal.

“Without prejudice, to any other liability prescribed by this Act, a registration which is not renewed in accordance with this section shall LAPSE and the Registrar may remove from the register the business name of the person whose registration has lapsed after the expiration of the period prescribed to the renewal.”

“Therefore, to avoid such business names falling into the public domain and for anyone of interest to use it after it has been struck off the business name register, all business name owners are entreated to renew their business Names before the end of April, 2023,” it mentioned.

It, however, urged the general public toavoid using any intermediaries and agent purporting to be ‘lawyers’ or staff of ORC demanding mobile money to renew their businesses for them.
