THE ASANTEHENE, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, planted a tree at the Golf Park to mark this year’s ‘Green Ghana Day’ programme in Kumasi.

Virtually leading by example, the Asante Monarch took time out of his tight schedule at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi by planting a tree to help protect the environment.

This year, the ruling government is targeting to plant 10 million trees, including different species, in order to help protect the environment.

The Asantehene, who has a track record of always contributing his part to green the environment, left the comfort of his palace to plant a tree.

Otumfuo’s tree planting exercise was witnessed by top government officials in Kumasi including Simon Osei Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister.

The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Forestry, Benito Owusu Bio, Kumasi Mayor, Sam Pyne and Ing. Nana Poku Agyeman were present at the event.

Benito Owusu Bio, in his address, lauded the Asante King for always supporting the government’s policies and initiatives to help protect the environment.

Mr. Owusu Bio also charged the citizenry to play active roles so that this year’s Green Ghana Day programme would be successful.

On his part, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, announced that plans were in the pipeline for the introduction of a policy to arrest stray animals in the city.

According to him, people whose stray animals would be apprehended, would have to pay a monetary fine before their animals would be released to them.

In the meantime, he charged the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce their by-laws against stray animals to help protect the trees planted.

In a related development, the Green Ghana Day programme was observed in the various assemblies in the Ashanti Region, attracting a high patronage.
