Police Gun Down Two Suspected Highway Robbers

Items found on the suspects

TWO SUSPECTED armed robbers have been shot dead in separate police operations following a series of attacks along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway in the Bono East and Ashanti regions.

The deceased have been identified as Oman Amandu, popularly known as Manu, and another yet-to-be-identified suspect believed to be part of a notorious robbery gang terrorising commuters on the stretch.

A police situational report on the incidents, disclosed that the first operation took place on March 18, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., when personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters, acting on credible intelligence, moved from Atebubu to Ejura to arrest the suspect at his hideout.

The suspect, who had been on the police wanted list, was linked to a robbery attack on March 14, 2026, during which occupants of a moving vehicle were shot at, leaving one passenger injured.

Upon arrival at the hideout, the suspect allegedly attempted to resist arrest by pulling out a single-barrel gun to engage the police team. The officers, in response, opened fire, hitting him.

He was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Items retrieved from him included a single-barrel gun, five live cartridges, GH¢200 in cash and a Tecno Pop 10 mobile phone.

In a related development, another suspected robber was also shot dead on March 25, 2026, at about 11:10 p.m., when PID personnel on routine patrol encountered a gang of about five armed men near Kasei on the Atebubu–Ejura stretch.

According to the police, the suspects, wielding an AK-47 rifle, single-barrel guns, machetes and sticks, attempted to stop an unmarked police vehicle by signalling with flashlights before opening fire.

The police team returned fire, resulting in an exchange of gunshots during which one of the suspects was hit. The remaining gang members managed to escape into the bush.

The injured suspect was transported to the Atebubu Government Hospital, but was also pronounced dead on arrival.

A search conducted on him led to the retrieval of a single-barrel gun, five live cartridges, two spent cartridges, six live AK-47 rounds, two spent AK-47 ammunition, multiple mobile phones, a machete, GH¢310 in cash, two wristwatches and other personal effects.

The bodies of both suspects have been deposited at the hospital morgue pending autopsy.

Meanwhile, police say a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the remaining members of the robbery gang who are currently on the run.
