Stray Bullet Kills Woman At Agbogbloshie

IGP David Asante-Apeatu

A clash between the police and some residents of Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra, has led to the death of a woman and the injury of three police personnel.

The woman, whose identity has been withheld by the police, was hit by a stray bullet, but the police personnel received minor injuries.

A Toyota Tundra that belongs to the police was also damaged in the process of the attack.

Reports received revealed that the police were at the scene to apprehend a notorious armed robber who was hiding his ‘booty’ in the area when they were attacked.

The said robbery suspect, identified as Nuhu Sully, was arrested in the process together with two of his accomplices, but the two managed to escape from police grips as a result of the clash.

The deputy Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Victor Dosoo, confirmed to DAILY GUIDE that the incident occurred on Tuesday morning.

He said the Accra Regional Police Command had information that Nuhu Sully – a ‘wanted’ armed robber – went for a robbery expedition on Monday night and was hiding the ‘booty’ at Agbogbloshie.

He noted that when the police got to the scene and managed to apprehend the suspect and two of his accomplices, residents of the area came out with cutlasses, pump action guns and other offensive weapons to attack the police in order to set the arrested suspects free.

Chief Inspector Dosoo stated that the personnel were pelted with stones while others also fired some gunshots.

In the process, two of the arrested suspects escaped from the hands of the police with the exception of suspect Nuhu, the kingpin.

The deputy Accra Regional Police Public Relations officer averred that in the process of the mayhem, a stray bullet hit the woman who died on the spot.

Later, the police called for reinforcement which led to the arrest of 15 others who allegedly played various roles in the attack on the police.

They are all in the custody of the regional command assisting police in their investigation.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters to conduct immediate investigation into circumstances that led to the death of the woman during the attack.

A statement issued and signed by the director general of the public affairs department said the police personnel were acting on information that robbery suspect, Sully Nuhu, was hiding at a ghetto at Agbogbloshie with items he had stolen during a robbery operation Monday night.
