Shot! L/Cpl Nicholas Duku
The police in the Western Region have arrested four people suspected of being involved in the robbery incident that resulted in the shooting and killing of Lance Corporal Nicholas Duku last Sunday.
The leader of the gang, a certain Kwaku Mintah, is said to be a Gospel singer. The dead cop was with the Tarkwa Divisional Command in the region.
According to the police, the suspects admitted carrying out the operation at the premises of a gold refinery company at Bogoso.
Three of the suspects were reportedly among five persons who were initially arrested by the police in connection with the incident. They were arrested in a taxi.
The fourth suspect, who was believed to be the driver of the vehicle used by the gang, was arrested later at Bogoso.
Twenty-eight workers of the gold refinery, who were also arrested immediately after the incident, had been released because the police did not find anything implicating about them.
The names of the four arrested were given as Fredrick Mensah, 32; Bismark Opoku, 34; Charles Kwesi, alias Yaw Laryea, 20 and Mohammed Dauda, 32.
According to the suspects, they were 10 in number and were lodging in a hotel at Bogoso where they purportedly planned the whole operation.
They have, however, denied stealing GH¢900,000 from the premises of Plant and Plume Gold Refinery Company Limited.
The suspects told the police that they rather made away with GH¢420,000 and shared it among themselves.
The Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, revealed these to DAILY GUIDE.
She stated that the armed robbers used a Nissan Roque with registration number GE 411-16 for the operation and later abandoned it at Opong Valley junction, near Bogoso.
She indicated that the suspects were being interrogated by the police to establish which of them really shot Lance Corporal.
The PRO stressed that the police would do everything within their power to arrest the rest of the six suspects who are currently at large.
Lance Corporal Nicholas Duku was said to be escorting a huge sum of money to the premises of Plant and Plume Gold Refinery Company, based at Bogoso, when he was reportedly shot by some unidentified armed men.
Other sources also had it that officials of the gold refinery approached the Tarkwa Police and requested for police escort to enable them convey money from Bogoso to Tarkwa.
