Some of the vehicles impounded
OVER 20 vehicles have been impounded by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ashaiman Divisional Police Headquarters for converting part of the Accra-Tema Motorway to a lorry terminal.
Drivers of the impounded vehicles were said to be loading passengers on the country’s expressway, thereby putting the lives of commuters in danger.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Isaac Kojo Forson, Ashaiman Divisional MTTD Commander, explained that the action of the drivers is against the road traffic regulation.
He further stated that converting the highway to a lorry park to load passengers can lead to accidents and loss of lives.
According to him, drivers of the vehicles would be processed before court to face the full rigour of the law.
The MTTD Commander said that his outfit had intensified efforts at clamping down on lawless motorcyclists and drivers, especially at traffic intersections and expressways, adding that “we will arrest and punish motorists who breach the road traffic regulations.”
To curb the increasing incidents of road offences and accidents in the country, DSP Forson said the MTTD had deployed its personnel in towns and major highways where accidents are rampant, and as such they have been equipped with traffic enforcement equipment to detect and arrest drivers who do not comply with road traffic rules.
He therefore advised motorists to ensure that they develop a maintenance culture and abide by all road regulations.
