The two young referees
Two young Ghanaian referees who have benefited from the Ghana Football Association’s Catch Them Young Refereeing Policy have been selected for the upcoming WAFU Zone B U17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
Mercy Boakyewaa Gyan has been appointed as a Centre Referee, while Linda Ayimpoka Asogro will serve as an Assistant Referee at the tournament, which runs from September 15 to September 28, 2026.
The duo are among 14 young officials selected by WAFU Zone B following the Young Talents Refereeing Course held at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram in March.
Two officials were selected from each of the zone’s seven member associations.
The initiative is designed to give promising referees valuable international exposure and practical experience.
The young officials will have the opportunity to officiate competitive matches, work alongside experienced referees and develop their technical and decision-making abilities.
For Gyan and Asogro, the tournament represents an important milestone in their careers and an opportunity to gain confidence while experiencing the demands of international football.
Their selection also highlights the impact of the Catch Them Young Refereeing programme, which identifies and develops refereeing talent at an early age.
With continued exposure and mentorship, the two Ghanaian officials will hope to progress to higher levels and eventually represent Ghana at major continental and international competitions.
