Veteran Actress, Grace Nortey, popularly known as ‘Maame Gyata’, has reportedly died at the age of 89.

The legendary actress is reported to have passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a career spanning more than five decades in Ghana’s theatre, television and film industries.

Grace Nortey celebrated her 89th birthday on February 1, 2026, making a rare public appearance during the occasion.

She became a household name during the golden era of Ghanaian television and theatre, featuring in popular productions including Obra, Osofo Dadzie, Key Soap Concert Party, Cantata and Thursday Theatre.

Her film credits also include Nana Akoto, Matters of the Heart, Ties That Bind, Sinking Sands, Amakye and Dede and the internationally acclaimed Beasts of No Nation.

Known for her commanding performances and strong female roles, Grace Nortey earned widespread respect as one of Ghana’s most accomplished veteran actresses.

In April 2025, she was among veteran actors honoured at AshantiFest for their contributions to the development of Ghana’s film industry.

Her reported death is a major loss to Ghana’s creative industry, bringing to an end the remarkable career of an actress whose work influenced generations of audiences and performers.
