Joyce Osei and her son
A woman has been convicted by the Bekwai District Magistrate Court for slashing her five-year-old son’s ear with a knife at their home at Koniyaw in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Joyce Osei, 40, flew into tantrums when she noticed that a portion of her food (ampesi) meant for breakfast had been eaten by the toddler.
She has pleaded guilty and was convicted accordingly by the court presided over by Nana Fobi, but the sentence has been deferred to June 5, 2018.
Police prosecutor, Detective Inspector Stephen Ofori said the incident occurred on May 20, 2018 around 8am at Koniyaw.
According to him, the victim, fourth son of the convict, demanded more of the food served them that morning as he was not full, but his mother ignored him.
The prosecutor narrated that the toddler, then, dashed into the kitchen and took a portion of his mother’s food. The woman became agitated and vented her spleen on the defenseless boy.
Inspector Ofori said, the victim’s mother held the boy by the neck and slashed his right with a sharp knife, causing the five-old boy to wail in agony with blood streaming all over him.
He later was taken to the SDA Hospital at Kotwia where the dangling ear was stitched.
Inspector Ofori disclosed that the Assemblyman for Koniyaw, Oppong Kyekyeku, then reported the incident to the police leading to the arrest of the woman.
She was later charged and arraigned after police investigations.
Meanwhile, father of the victim, who stays at Goaso in the Brong Ahafo Region, has since taken custody of the toddler.
