The police in Kasoa, Central Region, have apprehended two persons for allegedly altering the dates of some expired food products and cosmetics for sale to unsuspecting consumers.
The suspects, identified as Danso Abbeam and Ā Ā Perpetual Owusua, both traders in the Kasoa market, were hiding in their rooms at a town called Adam Nana and changing the dates when the police accosted them last Saturday.
Police reports indicated that the suspects had altered the dates of all the expired edible products and were working on the cosmetic products when the armed policemen arrived at the scene.
Items believed to have expired and had had their dates altered included 78 boxes of Apple Bubble Gums, 95 boxes of Lele Cornflakes, 115 boxes of Lorenz Crunch Chips, 40 boxes of Tom Evaporated Milk, 215 pieces of Vaseline Body Lotion, 135 pieces of Cocoa Paa Body Lotion, 18 pieces of Neutro Body Lotion, 35 sachets of Chicken Spices, 25 packets of Black Mosquito Coils and 2 boxes of Dr. Baked Beans.
Briefing DAILY GUIDE, the outgoing Kasoa District police commander, Superintendent Stephen Kofi Ahiatafu, said based on information, the police went to the house where the suspects were operating from and spotted the two people who had locked themselves in their respective rooms and were busily changing the expired dates on the products.
He said the suspects were immediately picked up and brought to the station for questioning.
Preliminary investigations had revealed that the suspects were among a network of suspected criminals who have been altering dates of expired products, after which they sell them to consumers at very cheap prices.
All the items have been seized and packed at the station while the suspects are being detained to assist the police to investigate the matter.
The police believe that the suspects had already sent some of the expired products to the market and have therefore, cautioned the public to be mindful of such products.
