Sixty-eight students of the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS) in Koforidua were rushed to hospital following a suspected case of food poisoning in the school.
The students were rushed to the hospital after eating Waakye at the school’s canteen, popularly known as “Sunday Special.”
One of the affected students said: “I bought Waakye at the bush canteen and on Sunday evening, I had upset stomach. Others who also ate at the dining hall also started complaining of stomach ache so we were rushed to the hospital.”
The Assistant Headmaster (academics) of the school, Kwaku Owusu, confirmed to DAILY GUIDE that a total of 68 students were affected, comprising 65 girls and 3 boys.
He noted that most of them were treated and discharged by doctors and nurses of the St Joseph Hospital on Monday night, adding that the school’s doctor and nurse examined the victims thoroughly before referring them to the hospital.
Some of the students were transported home by their parents while about eight received treatment at the hospital.
The Medical Director in-charge of St. Joseph Hospital, Dr David Kupualor, when contacted by the paper, said the hospital officials did everything possible to manage the situation.
He added that those on admission are also doing well and would be discharged soon.
As at the time of filing this report, no casualties had been recorded.
Meanwhile, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has commenced investigations into the matter.
The school’s management has temporarily closed down the canteen pending the outcome of the investigations by the Authority.
