June Inflation Records 18.4%

Year-on-year inflation rate stood at 18.4 percent in June 2016, down by 0.5 percentage point from the 18.9 percent recorded in May 2016.

Dr Philomena Nyarko, Government Statistician, who announced this to the media in Accra yesterday, said the monthly change rate for June 2016 was 1.3 percent compared to 1.1 percent recorded for May 2016.

The food and non-alcoholic beverages group recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 8.6 percent.

This, according to Dr Nyarko, was 0.1 percentage point higher than the 8.5 percent recorded in May 2016.

Also, six subgroups of the food and non-alcoholic beverages group recorded inflation rates higher than the group’s average rate of 8.6 percent.

The non-food group recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 24.1 percent in June 2016, compared to the 25.0 percent recorded for May 2016.

Four subgroups recorded year-on-year inflation rates higher than the group’s average rate of 24.1 percent.

Transport recorded the highest inflation rate of 40.3 percent, followed by Education with 33.3 percent, Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels with 32.8 percent, and Recreation and Culture with 27.4 percent. Inflation was lowest in the Communication subgroup (12.5 percent).

At the regional level, the year-on-year inflation rate ranged from 13.8 percent in the Upper East Region to 22.4 percent in the Greater Accra Region.

Two regions (Greater Accra and Ashanti) recorded inflation rates above the national average of 18.4 percent.
