EC Transports Ballot Boxes In Private Cars

Ballot papers transported with a private vehicle

The Northern Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sule Salifu, has stated that the party would resist any attempt by the Electoral Commission (EC) to use private vehicles to carry ballot boxes from the various polling stations after tomorrow’s elections.

He said Electoral Commission officials in the Tamale South Constituency are said to have used a private vehicle to transport some ballot boxes and other electoral materials to the Tamale District Police Headquarters.

The Murano SUV vehicle, which belongs to one of the EC officials, was used to convey the ballot boxes with the presiding officer, Musah Mohammed, while party agents followed it on motorbikes.

Confusion erupted at the headquarters when unused ballot papers from the Tamale North Constituency were reported missing; but it later turned out that it was one of the EC officials who took them away from the polling station.

The unused ballot papers were later brought to the police station to be added to the other papers.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Mr Sule Salifu said every EC office has a vehicle for their official duties and so did not understand why the commission said there was no vehicle available to transport the electoral materials to the police station.

According to him, should the EC use any private vehicle to carry electoral materials during or after tomorrow’s voting, the NPP would impound such a vehicle and send it to the police station.
