This year’s programme was the 7th edition of the Golden Climate International Environmental Project Olympiad (GCIEPO) and had about 183 environmental project innovations and ideas.

The Golden Climate Project Olympiad is a reputed environmental science competition that brings students from all walks of life, giving them an equal platform to share their revolutionary ideas.

The event in Kenya drew participants from countries such as Afghanistan, Belarus, Bosnia, DRC, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Iraq, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Mexico, Moldovia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, USA and Kenya.

The competition is to encourage students to find solutions to issues affecting the environment.

Students generate their own projects and move to actualize them under the guidance of their teachers.

Galaxy International School was the only educational institution from Ghana that participated in the competition, and it was represented by Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah and Abdulai Musah, whose sterling performance brought a lot of honour to Ghana.

Their project was on ‘Decreasing water wasting irrigation system using moisture sensor.’

This project among others picked the second topmost award at the event.

The project was on the use of technology in agriculture, and the students developed a computer programme that could control the quantity of water wasted on irrigation.

Giving the background to the project, Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah, student of Galaxy International School, indicated that their research was to find a better way of conserving water using the Arduino System.

He explained that using Arduino System in irrigation with time or humidity sensor will help save water, thereby decreasing the risk of water crises in the world.

Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzra, who is a first-year student of the school, was thankful to the management of Galaxy School for the opportunity and also the organizers for putting together such a wonderful programme.

He also encouraged other schools to take part in such programmes.

On his part, the principal of Galaxy International School Secondary Section, Hakan Karaman, noted that at Galaxy School, management sees it as a responsibility to encourage their students to engage their minds in solving burning issues.

He also added the school seeks to expose its students to others from other parts of the world in order to share their experiences.
