350 GHANA, an informal network of youth groups formed with the aim of mobilising and empowering young people to champion carbon emission reduction, has called on government to support senior high schools (SHSs) to go for renewable energy in order to achieve the 10 percent target by 2030.
The National Coordinator of 350 Ghana, Portia Adu-Mensah, said there was the need for Ghana to promote renewable energy systems as a key effort in combating climate change.
Speaking at a sensitisation programme on renewable energy at St Louis Senior High School in Kumasi, Ms Adu-Mensah indicated that adoption of renewable energy technologies such as the use of solar panels have contributed to supplementing energy demand of the country.
She disclosed that such adoption by St Louis SHS has led to reduction of electricity bills, intimating that it would be better for the nation if secondary schools could be taken off from the national grid and hook to solar.
“It will go a long way to improving the expenditure cost on utilities. This will also help in promoting renewable energy’s contribution to the energy mix,” she stated.
The renewable energy campaign programme, which was dubbed: ‘SHS Goes Renewable’, was organised to engage and sensitise students, teachers and the school administration on various renewable energy technologies for them to commit more to the use of renewable energies.
Ms Adu-Mensah pointed out that the event was organised with the aim to increase focus on putting an end to fossil fuels use so as to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 7.
“This event, therefore, served to orientate and invigorate effective participation of young people in the renewable energy advocacy,” she indicated.
She also shared some achievements of the organisation with the St Louis community and commended the school for its solar initiative.
The assistant headmistress of the school in-charge of administration, Regina Adusei, who welcomed the group, praised 350 Ghana for recognising the school’s effort and adoption of renewable energy.
