Imam of the Central Mosque at Bawku in the Upper East Region is in trouble following his comments about the conflict in the area.
As part of his Friday sermon, Sheikh Adamu Salihu said the behavior of the actors smacks of barbarism, likening it to that of animals in the jungle.
According to our sources, these comments did not go down well with the people of the area, leading to attacks on his family and property.
It was gathered that two of the Imam’s brothers were lynched as the man of God, his wife and son Salihu Adamu fled the town.
Bawku comprises different ethnic groups such as the Mamprusis, Kusasis, Busangas, Moshis and Fulanis.
Due to the volatile nature of the area, businesses shy away from there, which apparently prompted the Imam to preach about forgiveness and the need for a roadmap to a peaceful co-existence between the Mamprusis and Kusasis.
However, his comments backfired, leading to attacks on his family and yet another round of hostilities between the Mamprusisi and Kusasis. Until the government finds a lasting solution to this ethnic war which has raged on for decades, there will be perpetual records of casualties and loss of lives in the area.
