Vladimir Putin
Finally, Vladimir Putin has done the dreaded as he commences his campaign of aggression against the sovereign state of Ukraine, unprovoked.
To think that he dismissed such an action as an attempt by the US, to create unnecessary tension presents us with a politician who cannot be trusted with his words.
The free world is confronted with a man who would not mind triggering a global war.
Our envoy to the United Nations (UN) Harold Adai Agyeman, stated the position of Ghana unambiguously and in consonance with the rest of the free world, when he condemned the invasion and called for a reversal of the military action.
As we pointed out in an earlier commentary, when the US, based upon real time intelligence, spoke about an imminent military action against Ukraine by Russia, the economic fallout from such a breach will have a devastating effect on the global economy.
Even in the early days of the conflict, at the time of composing this commentary, the stock markets had all responded negatively.
With Europe and the US now naturally turning to the Middle East for energy sources especially gas supplies, prices of crude oil have already appreciated to a level which will impart our already fragile post-COVID economy.
The world has never come so close to a global war in which communist Russia is pitched against the rest of the free world.
At the time we editorialised on this subject earlier, we were convinced about the repercussions of the escalation of militarisation of the area between Russia and Ukraine. Now as the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN said during the emergency Security Council meeting on Wednesday, it is too late to continue with a diplomatic management of the subject.
The interconnectivity of the world could never have been so pronounced. A distant conflict’s fallout descending upon our country in a manner only the educated will appreciate.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the US although have provided sufficient weaponry to Ukraine to defend herself, we still think that the sanctions should be applied full throttle.
Time, by all means will sort out the befuddlement. We can bet that Vladimir Putin cannot hold the whole world to ransom. He would fail and the free world would triumph as would the people of Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin should have picked some lessons from books about the two global wars and their outcomes.
If he has forgotten about how his country came close to being annihilated but for the allied forces, let him to go back and read.
The whole world is gearing up for the negative repercussions of the conflict, and as we, do let us tell our unlettered citizens the truth, and not lies.
