The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun a joint round table exercise to enhance its preparedness and cohesion to better respond to evolving threats across land, maritime, air, cyber and information domains.
The three-day exercise involving top military leaders dubbed, ‘Ex Resolute Synergy 2026’, is designed to strengthen the Ghana Armed Forces’ operational preparedness, institutional cohesion, and professional competence.
Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, speaking at the opening ceremony said, “This exercise is not merely another event on the military training calendar, but represents a deliberate and strategic effort to prepare the Ghana Armed Forces for the increasingly complex demands of national defence and security.”
He added that the exercise is a practical expression of his vision to maintain a cohesive and professional force with skilled officers, dedicated soldiers, and committed defence civilian staff, who are trained to the highest standards, fully equipped, and highly motivated to safeguard Ghana’s sovereignty, drive national development, and contribute to regional and global peace and security.
“Hence, this particular Exercise seeks to integrate our personnel capabilities, our services, and our ideas in a manner that reinforces the unity of purpose required of any modern Armed Forces,” he added.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong said the exercise comes at a critical period in the history of Ghana and the West African sub-region, where the security environment has become increasingly volatile, with activities of violent extremist organisations spreading southwards.
“I, therefore, urge all commanders at all levels involved in this exercise to use their initiative, do more critical thinking, and show honest professional dialogue” he said.
Director General in charge of Training, Brigadier General William Kwabiah, speaking on the theme, “Enhancing Preparedness through Joint Training,” said the contemporary security environment is complex, dynamic, and unpredictable.
He indicated that the challenges faced as a nation are not likely to fall neatly within the responsibilities of any single service or institution.
“Dealing with these challenges requires coordinated action, sound judgment, timely decision-making, and effective collaboration across the Ghana Armed Forces and with other national stakeholders,” he indicated.
Brig. Gen. Kwabiah indicated that the exercise will also examine the effectiveness of command and control arrangements, information-sharing mechanisms, and inter-service coordination.
“Training must be purposeful, realistic, and responsive to the needs of our environment. At the conclusion of the exercise, we must be able to clearly articulate what worked, what did not work, why certain outcomes occurred, and what corrective measures are required,” he added.
