Vice President Bawumia

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia over the weekend excited people who had gathered to mourn the police officer who was killed at the Kwabenya police station by armed gangsters when he announced a new package for officers and men who get injured or fall (die) in the line of duty.

That was during the final funeral rites of the late Chief Inspector, Emmanuel Kwaku Ashilevi.

Announcing the reviewed compensation package, Dr Bawumia said the government was committed to improving and sustaining the general welfare of the officers and men of the Ghana Police Service.

Package

The new package covers personnel who got injured or died in the line of duty from the year 2002 till date and henceforward.

“The government has therefore, resolved stronger than ever to improve and sustain the general welfare of all police personnel to support the service in its fight against crime and also to make funds available to the police administration to appropriately compensate all police personnel who get injured or even those who lose their lives in the course of their normal and official duty,” Dr Bawumia stated. Inspector Ashilevi has since been posthumously promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

“To further demonstrate government’s commitment in this regard, the president has asked us to look at putting in place a package which is uniform for all the different ranks for policemen who died in the line of duty. In this regard, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Kweku Ashilevi would be the first recipient of this package,” Dr Bawumia claimed.

The wife and children of the late Emmanuel Ashilevi are set to receive a total of GH¢185,374.85.

Beneficiaries

This courtesy is being extended to 122 other policemen and their families who suffered a similar fate since the year 2002.
