Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor

Leader of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor has been granted GHC2 million bail by a Tema High Court on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

He has been asked by the court to provide two surieties who should deposit documents covering landed property within the jurisdiction.

Also, Barker-Vormawor has been directed by the court to report himself to the police once every week.

Meanwhile, the state has also been told by the court to continue to keep Barker-Vormawor passport.

Interestingly, the presiding judge, Justice Daniel Mensah after reading his judgment cautioned against the removal of constitutionally elected government through illegal means.

According to him, “Let me say this before I bring out the bail conditions without any prejudice to the outcome of the main case. Something in me says I should say it and I will say it. Coup is not a good thing.

“Although I support activism, no matter how we build our regime, coup is not an option.

“We’ve gone through it once and I don’t think we should go through it again.”

Barker-Vormawor was arrested on February 11, 2022, over claims that he had threatened to cause a coup if government went ahead to pass the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy commonly known as the E-levy.

He has been charged with treason felony and remanded by the Ashaiman District Court.

In his his application for bail before a Tema High Court, the social media activist denied the claims and said he is ready to face trial.

He further challenged the police, saying a charge of treason felony against him cannot be sustained by the evidence available hence he is ready to face trial.

However, the Attorney-General in an affidavit in opposition to the bail, insisted that evidence uncovered so far corroborates a charge of treason felony against the activist.
