Car Park For New Kumasi Market

Sam Pyne with the leadership of the Drivers Unions

SAM PYNE, the Mayor of Kumasi, has announced that the phase II of the ongoing Kumasi Central Market project, will include a spacious car park that can take 800 cars upon completion.

This is to help solve the perennial congestion problems in the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi.

According to him, the city centre, especially around Kejetia and Adum areas, are always choked with cars because of lack of adequate lorry parks.

Mr. Pyne said until the completion of the project, he was expecting the entire 24 transport unions, operating in the city, to support the KMA to help defeat congestion.

He disclosed this during a meeting between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the leadership of the various transport unions.

The meeting was geared towards finding suitable ways to help get rid of congestion in the city centre and enable the KMA and the Driver Unions to come out with suitable ideas, regarding how to make drivers disciplined anytime that they sit behind the wheels.

Sam Pyne said traffic on the roads in the city, among other things, adversely affects businesses and brings about negative effects, so it should be tackled with seriousness.

He said his administration has plans to complete all abandoned market projects in the city, especially the Krofrom Market.

“Currently, I am lobbying to get support from potential investors so that all markets that were started by the assembly, including the Krofrom Market, are completed.

“The completion of the Krofrom Market in particular, would ease the burden of traders and it can also help to reduce the pressure and congestion in the CBD,” Sam Pyne noted.

ACP Frank Aborakwa, Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, on his part, admonished drivers to be disciplined on the road to help ease congestion.

According to him, drivers should refrain from parking at unapproved places in the city as such actions contribute greatly to the congestion problem in the city.

Stephen Boateng, a representative from the GPRTU, said the assembly’s decision to complete satellite markets in the city was in the right direction, and pledged his outfit’s support.
