CID Probes Patrol Team Cop Shooting

CID

THE BRONG-AHAFO Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service says it has taken over investigation into the shooting incident that made Lance Corporal Sampson Yaw Arthur lose his life.

This occurred during a reported encounter with suspected highway robbers on the Kintampo-Tamale highway on Sunday.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, the regional crime officer, Superintendent Nana Kwaku-Duah, said the case had been transferred to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Headquarters and that the police patrol team had been asked to submit a report on what exactly took place during the encounter with the suspected robbers so as to identify who really fired the shot.

He however, said given the circumstances under which the cop was shot, personnel of the patrol team could not be blamed for now, but said investigations would uncover who was at fault.

It will be recalled that Lance Corporal Sampson Yaw Arthur, who was guarding an OA bus registered GE 6402-14 to a destination in the northern part of the country, was shot and killed by a member of a police patrol team last Sunday dawn when suspected robbers blocked a section of the highway and robbed passengers of their monies and belongings.

Supt Nana Kwaku-Duah however, said none of the robbers had been arrested yet but claimed the police were intensifying their investigation to arrest the culprits. He said as part of measures to curb the frequent highway robbery on that stretch of the road, the police administration would increase the number of patrol vehicles and intensify monitoring. Police barriers on the road too would be increased. He appealed to residents in that part of the region to volunteer information to the police for the culprits to be nabbed.

Giving preliminary report on what happened, Supt Kwaku-Duah said the police man was mistaken for one of the robbers because he got down from the bus which he was guarding and was shooting as he approached the actual scene of robbery, and that “because he was in mufti members of the patrol team mistook him for one of the robbers.”

He said until the driver of the bus approached the team and said the person they shot was a police man leading them to their destination, the police believed they had killed one of the robbers.
