Don Jazzy
Mo Hits records was by far one of Africa’s most successful record labels churning out superstars like D’banj, Wande Coal, D’Prince and many more. Behind the chart-topping record label were founders D’banj and Don Jazzy. For years, the pair would release numerous number one records, solidifying their global status as hit makers in the international music scene.
“It was the most beautiful relationship ever. I do not think there has ever been a relationship that has lasted this long. We were together for over eight years,” Don Jazzy said as he sat down with Forbes Africa correspondent, Peace Hyde.
With the growing success, came the pressures of money, fame and soon, the dynamic duo’s loyalty was tested when a once in a lifetime opportunity came knocking. The group caught the attention of Kanye West and Rocafella records who made them an offer they couldn’t refuse, to join the infamous and highly successful American record label. It was a dream come true for D’banj, however, Don Jazzy believed that they should have taken a more cautious approach.
“I didn’t think we were ready for that level. It may take me a long time to get there but when the time is right I know it will be perfect. There was no way of joining the roc and taking my other artistes along with me and I couldn’t leave them behind and we need to be in position where we could make the right demands,” Don Jazzy added.
The pair had to take the difficult decision of going their separate ways after years of making hits together. The day was the worst day in business for Don Jazzy who shared his experiences with Peace Hyde on the Forbes Africa TV Show. His experiences led him to take a different approach with the way he runs his new record empire, Supreme Mavin Dynasty.
“I now make sure I have three year contracts with all my artistes after which they understand they are free to do whatever they want,” he disclosed. With new artistes like Korede Bello, Reekado Banks and Tiwa Savage under his imprint, Don Jazzy proves that he is still the most successful music mogul on the continent and his worst day is far behind him.
