ECG To Prosecute Yilo Krobo Transformer Destroyers

Chris Apawu

THE ELECTRICITY Company of Ghana (ECG) has vowed to prosecute persons responsible for destroying its transformers in the Manya and Yilo Krobo municipalities.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News, the General Manager for ECG in Krobo, Chris Apawu, said whoever was found to have been part of the destruction of over twelve of the company’s transformers will be prosecuted.

He said, “What they did is illegal; if you are arrested, you will be prosecuted. And I can promise you that we will be firm now to make sure we prosecute whoever enters our network illegally. The innocent have suffered just because of the recklessness of a few.”

The Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo municipalities were disconnected from the national grid for the past weeks.

His comments come after weeks of the residents living in darkness, for failing to pay their bills among others until power was restored last Friday evening.

Communities in the Yilo Krobo and Manya Krobo municipalities from Somanya to Kpong have been in darkness since Wednesday, July 27, because ECG switched off feeders supplying power to communities in the two municipalities over illegal connections.

According to ECG, some recalcitrant residents tampered with their transformers and reconnected power to their homes after they were disconnected for refusal to accept prepaid meters.

Meanwhile, an agreement has been brokered by the National Security at a meeting attended by officials of the ECG and paramount chiefs among other stakeholders.

Eric Tetteh, Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, has encouraged residents in the area to support the exercise as ECG continues with the installation of pre-paid meters in the area this week.
