GAF Refutes Coup Allegations

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a statement addressing recent comments attributed to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance, regarding the military’s role in potential election-related violence.

In a publication on GhanaWeb, Dr. Akwetey alleged that GAF threatened to take control of the country if elections become violent beyond the capacity of the Ghana Police Service.

In response, GAF clarified that it has never held a press conference declaring intentions to seize power.

The military emphasised that it would only assist the Ghana Police upon request, and that such support does not equate to an overthrow of the government.

A statement issued by Director General of Public Relations, Brig Gen E. Aggrey Quashie indicated, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will actively resist any attempts by individuals or groups to unlawfully assume power.”

The military urged civil society organisations and media outlets to refrain from using its name in a manner that could escalate political tensions in the country.

As Ghana approaches the December 2024 elections, GAF reiterated its commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process, and called on all stakeholders to foster an environment where citizens can engage in lawful activities without fear.

“We look forward to peaceful elections and urge all institutions not to associate GAF with actions that could heighten political tension,” the statement added.
