Ghana Hosts Moot Court Competition

The School of Law of the University of Ghana has won the right to host the 27th edition of All Africa Human Rights Moot Court competition in August 2018 in Accra.

About seventy-five (75) Law Faculties from African Universities are expected to attend the event which has been described as having the potential to re-position Africa from Human Wrongs to Human Rights.

Prof. Kofi Quashiga, Dean of the School of Law made the disclosure on Tuesday at the school’s auditorium during the launch of the competition and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the host institution and the University of Pretoria, South Africa who are the principal organizing university.

He said the event which is held annually is a forum for young African Law Students to discuss and debate over current human rights issues of relevance to Africa.

According to him, the Moot started as an initiative of the Human Rights Centre of the University of Pretoria and limited at the time to the South African region.

The Dean was happy that the scope of the Moot from 1995 was expanded to cover students from Law Faculties of all African states.

Prof.Frans Vijeon, Director of Human Rights at the University of Pretoria was happy that the School of Law was hosting the Moot Court competition for the third time.

“Ghana is a beacon for others to follow and I acknowledge the collaborations between the two universities which has greatly strengthen the Moot over the years,” he remarked.

Prof. Vijeon reiterated that the Moot Court Competition was a platform to help set the agenda of creating a new generation of Lawyers who will champion the cause of Human Rights.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof.Oduro Owusu who performed the launching, said the School of Law hosting such an event is an opportunity for sharing best practices within the Human Rights framework.

Miss Keziah Hilary Engmann and Aniela Allotey, Level 300 students of the School of Law will be representing the University of Ghana in the event which has been described as a gathering of African Law Faculties.
